History

Founded in 1914 as The Rittenhouse Flower Market Association (RSFMA), in 2008, the name was changed to The Rittenhouse Square Flower Market for Children’s Charities (RSFMCC)(hereinafter referred to as “The Flower Market”), to better explain to the community the purpose of the Market.

Since its inception, The Flower Market, a 501(c)(3) organization, has been comprised solely of volunteers and has raised in excess of $1.6 million.  Held on two consecutive days in May, this event has become a longstanding Philadelphia tradition——in fact, the Flower Market is the oldest continuously-held event in Rittenhouse Square. At The Flower Market, Committee members, beneficiaries, nonprofit and commercial vendors sell brightly-colored flowering standing and hanging plants, flower-related crafts and savory herbs.

The organization provides a unique service for the participating charities, not simply by issuing handouts, but rather by directly involving the beneficiaries in the fundraising efforts and affording them an opportunity to showcase themselves.  The Flower Market days mark the culmination of a year-long project for these beneficiaries, in which their advisory boards, their constituents and their volunteers work together to plan their booth, order and/or create their products, and sell them in a colorful, fragrant arena.

The chosen beneficiaries for 2012 are:

•    ANTI-VIOLENCE PARTNERSHIP OF PHILADELPHIA
•    MIGHTY WRITERS
•    PENNSYLVANIA SCHOOL FOR THE DEAF (PATCH&S)
•    RUBYE’S KIDS, INCORPORATED
