FLOWER MARKET TO TURN PARK INTO STORYBOOK FOREST

RITTENHOUSE SQUARE, PHILADELPHIA–For the 96th annual Rittenhouse Square Flower Market for Children’s Charities on May 5-6, the Square will be transformed into a “Storybook Forest”, courtesy of actors from Temple University’s School of Communications and Theater portraying fictional and floral characters, providing photo ops, impromptu performances, crafts and prizes.

The Market, the oldest continuously-held event in Rittenhouse Square, benefits and spotlights Boys & Girls Clubs of Phila., Smith the Kids’ Play Place in the Park, Tabor Children’s Services and Youth Service, Inc.  Flowering plants, herbs, indoor and everlasting plants, along with food, crafts, signature lemon sticks and Little Miss Rittenhouse posters are sold at the Market, which is free and open to the public from 8 a.m. – 6 p.m. both days (rain or shine).

Falling on the immediately preceding Wednesday and Thursday, the Flower Market serves as a prelude to Mother’s Day, featuring custom plantings, terrace gardening, entertainment continuing into the evening and last minute Mother’s Day cards and gifts.

“During this unfortunate time of severe governmental cut-backs and declines in donations to non-profits, the Flower Market is a way Philadelphians can help compensate.  Each plant purchased beautifies Philadelphia and benefits deserving children in our community,” comment Curtis J. Roth, Esq. and Barbara Pomerantz, Market Coordinators and Co-Presidents of RSFMCC.

Composed solely of volunteers, the award-winning RSFMCC will be raising money in 2010 for medical screenings for runaway and homeless youth living in a shelter, after-school homework assistance, free and creative play areas for young children, and safe and directed summer programming.  Last year, the Flower Market distributed over $27,000.00 to its beneficiaries for their locally-based programs.

2010 Beneficiary Sponsors include U.S. Facilities, Inc. and Coldwell Banker Preferred.  Friends of the Market sponsors include The Rittenhouse Foundation.  In-kind sponsors include Atria Senior Living, Weekly Press, Beneficial Bank and Rittenhouse Row.
